The permanent collection in the museum is dedicated to the times of Altamira, art, culture, life and skills of groups of hunter-gatherers who lived during the Upper Palaeolithic Old Europe.
The exhibition is based on a selection that brings together some of the best collections of original Paleolithics of Spain: more than 400 exceptional pieces are from the museum's own funds and other state museums (National Archeological Museums, Anthropology, Natural Sciences, from America) and Cantabria’s Prehistoric and Archeological Museum, Bellas Artes of Santander, Archaelogists from Valencia and Asturias and even the private collection of the Isturitz Cave (France).
In the original Paleolithic tools exhibition the situations for which they were designed, manufactured and used are explained. Several movies show examples of their daily lives, for example, how they made their spears to hunt with or how to light a bonfire in the camps.
