In the historic center of Santillana there are four fountains and a washing and watering area that have survived on the streets since the XVI century.
Of all the washing and watering areas this is the most known and reproduced in photographs due to its location, which has the Colegiata de Santa Juliana right beside it, and in behind, the arch of the Casa de Quevedo, which allows the drainage of the spring that emerges next to the washing area.
On the same street, and attached to the wall of the current torture museum, contains one of the fountains whose ornament, a vase framed in a niche, is in the baroque style from the XVII century. Equally and in the same décor is Gándara Street, located at the entrance to the town.
In the Plaza Mayor is another fountain. Its decoration, also baroque, links its drainpipe in several braided cords.
The last one is in the Revolgo field, although it’s from the same period as the ones above it has recently been decorated with a sculptor from Jesús Otero.
PARKS
Revolgo Field (La Robleda), is located on the southern edge of the village, you can get to it from Puente San Miguel.
If the Plaza Mayor, was where the market was taking place since medieval times, the Revolgo Field was the space reserved for celebrations. Receptions took place for the envoys of the king and the lords of the town, besides being the place for tournaments and popular celebrations.
A road passes through it, which, from Puente San Miguel, crossed Santillana towards Comillas and the West Coast, its origin Roman or Medieval not known for sure.
Currently, its most unique element is the bowling alley, one of the oldest in Cantabria, and an old oak, 16 meters high with a circumference of 5.3 m. at the base of it.
Palace Peredo Barreda Garden
The Palace of Caja Cantabria Peredo Barreda, has an exceptional garden which was planned in the XIX century. The French-style garden is geometrized around the house. There’s a pond in the back of the area where the paths divide that lead deep into the forest.
What stands out from its magnificent forest is the only ginkgo included in the catalog of unique trees in Cantabria. Originally from China and Japan, its uniqueness lies in being considered a living fossil by experts. Besides it is also cataloged as a eucalyptus tree 35 meters high and nearly 10 of the perimeter.
It’s common for sculpture exhibitions to be held in the garden during the summer.
Jesús Otero Museum Garden
This small garden surrounding the Jesus Otero museum, Plaza del Abad Francisco Navarro, has its value in the sculpture that sets out the local artist who gives name to the Museum. As a prelude to the collection inside, you can see pieces representing heads of horses, bulls, sheep and a representation of bulls butting heads.
