Throughout the year, but especially during the summer, Santillana del Mar and all of Cantabria is overflowing with sporting activities. These sports include cycling and bowling. These sports which are enjoyed in Santillana are very traditional and have deep roots within the different villages. There are numerous competitions throughout the municipality.
SKITTLES
Skittles is the vernacular sport of Cantabria and has a great following that has increased dramatically during recent years. One of its forms is known as the "palm skittle" and in the town of Santillana del Mar it has a large number of fans and players.
By coincidence, it turns out that in Santillana you’ll find the bowing alley (Bolera de El Revolgo), considered the oldest in Cantabria and dating back to 1726. Apart from the bowling alley in Santillana, we can also play this sport in the neighbouring towns of Arroyo, Las Quintas and Vispieres.
This is an individual game, played in pairs or "boulders", it’s played daily between the months of April to October, both professional competitions and in games organized by the villagers themselves.
In the town of Santillana del Mar tournaments are conducted in Santa Juliana, with 1,000 € in prizes on June 27th and in San Cipriano on September 17th for a prize of 1,500 €, two 1st class tournaments. For amateurs or fans of the sport there are competitions organized by Peña Bolística Santillana The Pradrón, the Santuca de Arroyo and San Jorge in Vispieres. There’s also the Pairs Competition in Santillana and the Social Competition which is played in Arroyo.
Today’s most popular Bolo Palma (palm skittle) players attended the San Cipriano Cipriano Contest, Jesus Salmon, Ruben Hague, Tete Rodriguez, Emilio Antonio Rodriguez, Roberto G. Mallavi, Ruben Rodriguez, Oscar Gonzalez and Alfonso Gonzalez.
The municipality has the following Peñas or Teams in competitions in various categories: Bansander in 2nd Category B, who play in the Revolgo de Santillana bowling alley, San Jorge in 3rd Category in Vispieres and in the amateur category the Peñas of La Santuca in Arroyo and the Pradón in Santillana.
CYCLING
In 2006 the Escuela Ciclista de Santillana (Santillana Cycling School) was established with key support from Santillana del Mar’s Hon. City Hall and whose organization and operation rests with the C.C. Herminio Diaz Zabala.
From the year 2008 and with the aim of expanding and giving more coverage to the Cycling School, and given the interest shown by Reocín’s Hon. City Hall to collaborate with the School, is started to work with this council and changing its name to the Escuela Ciclista de Santillana – Reocín. During this time the school has steadily grown and currently has a 35 to 40 students enrolled.
The School seeks to fulfill a social and sports function through cycling, trying to instill in all the students a healthy lifestyle and a sport with all the positive values that this entails.
The Cycling School’s sports project integrates all pupils within the concept of schools (comprised of ages 6 to 16), and the idea of continuing to keep these athletes and sporting activities within the C.C. Herminio Diaz Zabala which also has a junior category, under the patronage of Isidoro San Justo, allowing all students to continue practicing this sport, at least until age of 18.
