Located on the Central Coast, Santillana del Mar has a privileged location in Cantabria. It’s very close to major roads, has a quick and easy access, plus the coastal route to the Camino de Santiago passes through their municipality.
This location also makes it an ideal place from which to organize other excursions within Cantabria and neighboring provinces.

There are two bus stations that are relevant for access to Santillana. They are in Torrelavega and in Santander. Both have several lines that connect with different parts of the region and are they’re the main lines that run north of the peninsula or towards Madrid.
Parayas Airport is about 34 km from Santillana del Mar. It’s located on the outskirts of Santander and has several domestic flights (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga,Gran Canaria, Seville and Reus) as well as international flights to (London, Dublin,Rome, Milan and Frankfurt). The airport has taxis and buses that can transfer you to the bus station in Santander, only a few meters from the railway stations, Renfe and FEVE.
To get to Santillana you may opt to rent a car or other alternative means such as train or bus.
For those who want get to our town by car, you’ll be pleased to know that Santillana has two large car parks from which to begin the visit.
The recommended routes for accessing the village depending on their origin are:
From Asturias (or from any point west of the town). The Cantabrian motorway (A-8) is the best route, take the exit to the town of Puente San Miguel, then take the road (CA-133) which leads directly to Santillana.
On the coast. There are two routes to Santillana del Mar from the coastal towns of the region. The first from the west and the road running through the area is the (CA-133) road which leads you to Santillana through the towns of La Revilla, Comillas, Ruiloba, Cóbreces andOreña. The second comes from the east from the town of Suances across the road (CA-351).
From Burgos-Palencia. From the south, take the Meseta motorway (A-67) in the direction of Santander which will take you to the town of Torrelavega, then take the Cantabrian motorway (A-8) in the direction of Cabezón de la Sal and Oviedo. On this motorway you’ll take the exit to Puente San Miguel, where you will then take the road (CA-133) which leads directly to Santillana del Mar.
From Santander-Bilbao. From the east, you can access the A-67 which departs from Santander. Those driving from the Basque Country will need to take the Santander route on the Cantabrian motorway (A-8). Then the A-67 in the direction of Torrelavega, then take the Suances exit to the Santillana del Mar exit across the road (N-611). In the town of Barreda you’ll find a roundabout where you take the road (CA-131) that will take you directly to Santillana del Mar.
There is a taxi company that has an hourly service and can serve as a means of direct transportation or as a perfect liaison with the other transport modes described.
